For me, this quote also speaks to how close Addie is to Estele at the beginning of this novel. I love the idea of waiting for a neighbor to open the door: the anticipation and the patience (or lack thereof) that fill the moment. In my original review of Addie LaRue, I mentioned that I hadn’t expected the descriptive language in this novel, but I’m so glad it exists throughout! This is the first quote that really hit me with Schwab’s use of metaphor in the text. She can hear the steps, the low rasp of the lock, and knows that it will give. It’s like waiting at a neighbor’s door after you’ve knocked, when you know they are home. And even better, I’m including page numbers! So without further ado, let’s jump right into the first quote. I want to take some time to dive deeper into books that stick with me by taking a look at the moments that made me stop and grab a sticky note. That’s where posts like this are going to come in. I could remember the quote and roughly where it was in the book, but I would never be able to find the page number, and it seemed like every time I would look them up online, I would find the quote, but no location so that I could cite the quotes. One of the hardest parts of writing those, at least for me, was finding the quotes that I wanted to use.
